The Scene in the City: Halloween

Halloween is lurking upon us, but folks have been gearing up for the celebration for weeks. The ladies of Music City Burlesque recently held their 2nd Annual Boolesque at The Belcourt theatre. The sold out show didn’t disappoint the packed house, leaving ladies and gentlemen begging for more. Miss Lollypop and Frankie Apple hosted this year’s event.

Over the weekend, my pals took advantage of the nice weather and carved some pumpkins. Although, I was fond of our pumpkin that we carved into a dogface, Heather Byrd took home the prize for her lady pumpkin with earrings.

Also over the weekend, Lara from Superhooper stopped by Nashville to host a slew of hula hoop workshops. Lara, her man Drew, their 3 year-old daughter and black lab have piled into a bus and are driving across the country to teach hula-hoop workshops. Several of us took Lara up in her offer and learned how to hula-hoop fire. Fire has a spooky Halloween tie-in right?

Still to come…
Friday night, Venus and Mars is hosting Peer Through the Looking Glass, The Arthritis Foundation’s Bone Bash will be at The Cannery and will feature the Tyrone Smith Revue band AKA Super T and The Nashville Cream will host Hallo-cream upstairs in the Mercy Lounge. Matt Friction and the Cheap Shots, The Zut Alors and Chris Crofton are just a few of the bands you can catch there.

Saturday night the same folks that bring you the monthly “Happy Valley” parties, will host Haunted Valley. The block party that will take over 12th & Porter and Mai will feature performances from Warren G (yes THE Warren G), Designer Drugs, Coach VS Kase, Sanchez and the Shockers, Play Me, DJ ROD and The Spinderellas. Special shout out to Play Me for spicing up The Spinderella’s spooky Vampire music!

Meantime Hustler Hollywood’s Nightmare in Music City will take over Cannery Row with DJ’s and four heated tents.

On the East side- The 6th annual Yazoo Halloweast Pub Crawl will take over the bars in Five Points and feature music by Less Honky More Tonky, Ballhog and The Delta Saints.

In Green hills- The 2nd annual Halloween Tent Party will be rocking The Greenhouse. This year’s festivities will feature music from DJ Mindub and a photo booth.

The party will feature electronic performances from Twist of Cain Room, George Acosta, Lazaro Casanova, Miles Maeda with support from: Chris Step (electro), Mic 1 (breaks, Lava Prods., Knoxville) and Brent G.

Seen in the City~

Photobucket Steph spies report spotting Reese Witherspoon with a little kid, walking Monday afternoon outside a kids boutique in the Hill Center.

Thursday night, Miley Cyrus and Justin Gaston were spotted by Steph spies at Fido in Hillsboro Village. I thought they broke up, I guess the singer and underwear model are still friends?

Also last Thursday,Vince Gill donated his time to put on an intimate concert benefitting the YMCA We Build People program at The Bluebird Cafe. Vince is pictured here with a fan from the Green Hills Y.

Martina McBride, her hubby and daughter enjoyed dinner at the Loveless Cafe last Friday. Martina enjoyed a fried chicken salad.

Urban Arts Bizarre is a success!

Hundreds gathered at The Arcade in downtown Nashville last Thursday night, including Mayor Karl Dean, for the Urban Arts Bizarre. Gallery doors were opened as live music, Playing by Air jugglers, The Spinderellas hula hoopers, members of the Nashville Rollergirls, Miss Lolly Pop’s Burlesque Coterie and other street performers entertained the crowd. Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School set up shop for artists to sketch live posed performers. In which I had the honor of partaking in.

The benefit helped raise money for ARTDOCS (Artists Receiving Treatment Doctors Offering Crucial Services). The new nonprofit organization in Nashville provides healthcare services to uninsured artists, performers and writers.

ARTDOCS was created by Jonathan Ferrara, a gallery owner who saw the need in his hometown of New Orleans and has since expanded to Nashville.

Among those pictured- Larry “The Panty Boy,” Leela Sophina, Jacob Weis juggling, 2-foot Fred, Ryan Gray AKA Kitti Lee and Trent & Casey Summar

Kings of Leon return for big homecoming!

Kings of Leon returned home to Nashville last week to play The Sommet Center. The guys got a warm welcome from Music City, by selling out the venue. Lead singer, Caleb Followill mentioned that the last time they were at The Sommet center was for a church convention. Also during the set, he dedicated Sex is on Fire to their grandmother, who was in the audience and never seen her grandsons play before. He joked that they will probably never play it again. The guys closed with one of my favorite songs, Use Somebody.

Heather Byrd reported seeing Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman partying with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill in a suite at the show. I also heard Extreme Makeover host Ty Pennington was there.

Despite telling thousands of fans on the mic that they would be having drinks at the hotel Marriot afte the show, the Kings of Leon held a private party at Whiskey Kitchen. Entrance to the party was on pretty tight lockdown. Once inside, there was a decent gathering of local rockers and friends. Members of the band were also spotted hanging there earlier in the week. The guys have always been supporters of Chris Hyndman’s businesses. Before they got so popular, KOL were often found at his now defunt club Layla Rul.

Among those pictured from the show & at the after party- Casey Stribling & Holly Williams, Evyn Mustoe, Jaren Johnston & Neil Mason of American Bang, Scott Alderson, Jim OShea, Heather Byrd, Stephanie Langston, Casey Porter & Albert Hacker, Layla Ellis & Imaan Ferdowsi, Scott, Amanda Eisel & Tim Estes, John Hardin & David Chase, Karen Higbee, Lee Holyfield & Tommy Putnam, Memree Phillips, Curt Revelette & pals

Dave Matthews to join Kenny Chesney on stage at the CMA Awards

Photobucket

Country superstar Kenny Chesney is always mixing genres up, by pulling in an array of A-list talent to perform with him. Last year during CMA week he played with The Wailers & Kid Rock at Tootsies . This year, Dave Matthews will be joining Kenny for “country music’s biggest night.”

Kenny and Dave will perform “I’m Alive,” which they recorded together for Chesney’s Lucky Old Sun album. The song was originally recorded by Willie Nelson. The Matthews/Chesney duet is the current single from Chesney’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 2.

The 43rd annual CMA Awards will be held on Wednesday, November 11th. Tickets are still available through Ticket Master or at the Sommet Center.

Keith Bulluck to open a winery…

when he retires that is. At least that’s what he said he would like to do “in 15 years or so.” Who knew Keith had such a passion for wine? The Tennessee Titans linebacker hosted his 4th Annual Wine Tasting Event, “In Vino Veritas,” at Sambuca earlier this week. There was not nearly as strong of a turnout as in previous years, could it be because the Titans were undefeated last year? However, it seemed more players than usual came out in support and a few fans stood outside the doors for autographs. Cortland Finnegan, Eddie George, Vince Young, Albert Hanynesworth and country singer Keith Anderson were among those at the event which included; a variety of wines and appetizers, a silent auction and a performance by Laura Vida. For those who did make it to the party, it was a great time to have some one-on-one conversations with your favorite players.
The event benefitted Keith’s Believe and Achieve Foundation.

Garth Brooks out of retirement and headed to Vegas!

Photobucket NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)— Country superstar Garth Brooks announced Thursday that he’s coming out of retirement with a show in Las Vegas.

Brooks, 47, said at a news conference in Nashville that he will end his retirement with an extended engagement at the Wynn Resort.

The move has been rumored in the music industry for weeks.

Brooks retired in 2000 to spend more time with his three children. He’s occasionally popped up in special appearances at awards shows and charity events, but has mostly stayed out of the limelight.

The Seen in the City- NBN, Octoberfest & Haunted Houses

It was a busy weekend indeed, but we managed to attend Next Big Nashville, Octoberfest & a haunted house. Here is a weekend round-up of the “seen in the city.”

Next Big Nashville (NBN) began as a showcase for Nashville’s music scene in 2006 and has quickly grown into a 4 day, nationally recognized music festival and conference. Every year the organizers add something new to the fest, which takes over nearly every rock venue in town. This year they stepped outside the box, by adding Nashville’s honky tonks to the list of venues. I popped downtown Friday night for the NBN Honky Tonk Takeover to checkout The Clutters performing at Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge (pictured), Joshua Black Wilkins at The Wheel and The Branded Sons at Paradise Park (pictured). Sadly, not many festival goers turned out at the honky tonks, but the bars were rather filled with typical tourists. I will note that The Clutters had the best local turnout of the bands that I saw. Anyhow, the typical NBN venues were packed. Afterwards, we caught Ten Out Tenn at Mercy Lounge (pictured).

Later in the evening, we stopped by Slaughterhouse (pictured) which is one of the few haunted houses conveniently located to town. I haven’t been to a haunted house in so many years. Thanks to my sis for holding my hand and Heather for making me step outside my comfort zone. Who knew, guess I’m all grown up now!

Saturday, Nashville’s Germantown neighborhood celebrated Oktoberfest for it’s third decade. Simultaneously, the Germantown Street Festival was rocking as well. The festivals provided blocks of music, street performers, arts and crafts, German food, beer and characters clad in lederhosen. Among those pictured- Brad Stauffer, Roger Bradley, Tommy Cooper & GR Davis, Ben Muldrew & Ulli Heregger, “Peacock”, Ashley Blevins, Kristen Evett, Lynn Edwards, Matt Gale, Tom Hadley & pals, Audrey with The Dye Guy, Jenny Spainhoward with Mountain Mama Designs and Grind with the Wind

The 2nd Annual Block and White Party packed Virago with fashion forward ladies and gents in all shades of black and white Thursday. Models and talent from the Block Agency, along with some music industry insiders mingled about the restaurant and checked out the silent auction. Proceeds from the event went to the Jay Cuter Foundation, which helps underprivileged youth and supports diabetes research. Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears QB, even attended the party as well.

Among those pictured- Jay Cutler, Bo Martinovich & Mark Block of the Block Agency, Abbie Audotta, Heather Farley & Danielle Rice, Sheg Aranmolate, Amber Williams & Scott Chapman, Vickie Downing & Michael McDavid, Lauren Grissom & Katie Babcock, Dennis Rauchet & Jen Cunningham of Fox News, George & Margret Uribe, Erin Mills & Bethany Barton, Josh Macer, Sabrina Davenport & pals, Deanna Bruton, George & Stephanie Langston and Austin Ratliff
